Marxism

Marxism is used as a critical approach in literature. The graveyard book was written by Neil Gaiman ,and was published in 2007. The graveyard book describes each character’s class system. The social class system is known as higher class, middle class, and lower class. The higher class people is known as civilized, educated, money, and good manners. The middle class people are the common people, educated, and working class. The lower class people is known as also the common people, but has less money, and not educated. Basically, Marxism is base on personal income and education level of people.

According to Neil Gaiman every character was placed in class system. The four characters were described and they are Mrs. and Mr. Owens, Miss Lupescu, the ghouls, and the man jack. We can tell that Mr. and Mrs. Owens belong in the middle class. They are the care taker of Bod also known as Nobody. It is known that middle class people are hard worker and kind hearted. Mr. and Mrs. Owens are kind hearted because they have kept Bod and took care of him. They were also very honest and had common sense to take the baby in the beginning. They worked hard to make Bod feel safe and healthy in the graveyard as his home. Mr. and Mrs. Owens had protected Bod by the other ghosts and undead creatures in the graveyard. They also gave another care taker to look after if there busy who is the undead Silas. He becomes Bod tutor and guardian. Mr. and Mrs. Owens took Bod because they were married for a long time but yet they had no child of their own. By adopting Bod they called him his only child and son.

Since the higher class people are known as rich and educated people we can tell that Ms. Lupescu can be placed there. She may not be rich in the book as she was described. But her thoughts and actions are from the higher class system. In the real world rich people are known as cruel and selfish people. When she first came to take care of Bod she was mean and uncaring to him. But she did care for him that’s why she gave him healthy food. According to Bod healthy food was a crime to him and that’s why he hated him. We can also say that she was very educated and thought Bod a lot of important things. He hated to memorize the things she would give him because to him he thinks that it is unnecessary.
