Essay # 5
Marxism
Marxism is used as a critical approach in literature. The graveyard book was written by Neil Gaiman ,and was published in 2007. The graveyard book describes each character’s class system. The social class system is known as higher class, middle class, and lower class. The higher class people is known as civilized, educated, money, and good manners. The middle class people are the common people, educated, and working class. The lower class people is known as also the common people, but has less money, and not educated. Basically, Marxism is base on personal income and education level of people.
According to Neil Gaiman every character was placed in class system. The four characters were described and they are Mrs. and Mr. Owens, Miss Lupescu, the ghouls, and the man jack. We can tell that Mr. and Mrs. Owens belong in the middle class. They are the care taker of Bod also known as Nobody. It is known that middle class people are hard worker and kind hearted. Mr. and Mrs. Owens are kind hearted because they have kept Bod and took care of him. They were also very honest and had common sense to take the baby in the beginning. They worked hard to make Bod feel safe and healthy in the graveyard as his home. Mr. and Mrs. Owens had protected Bod by the other ghosts and undead creatures in the graveyard. They also gave another care taker to look after if there busy who is the undead Silas. He becomes Bod tutor and guardian. Mr. and Mrs. Owens took Bod because they were married for a long time but yet they had no child of their own. By adopting Bod they called him his only child and son.
Since the higher class people are known as rich and educated people we can tell that Ms. Lupescu can be placed there. She may not be rich in the book as she was described. But her thoughts and actions are from the higher class system. In the real world rich people are known as cruel and selfish people. When she first came to take care of Bod she was mean and uncaring to him. But she did care for him that’s why she gave him healthy food. According to Bod healthy food was a crime to him and that’s why he hated him. We can also say that she was very educated and thought Bod a lot of important things. He hated to memorize the things she would give him because to him he thinks that it is unnecessary.
Thats all soo far...

The Graveyard book has some critical perspectives that made us understand the meaning through the situations that appears in the novel. To understand literature we might have to do a little more extra searching on the novel to find hidden meanings. Like for instance, the main motifs or symbolism is the knife. Some people might not know what a knife symbolizes. They might only know that a knife is very dangerous but it also has alot of more to it. The one of the main approaches I would chose is Marxism/Social Criticism. This novel first applies the social class of each character. The parents who were killed were describe as rich people. We can tell by all the evidence and objects that were described. I also think that the killer who is The Man Jack who can be described as from a lower class family with no standards. I am saying because the Man Jack was not described as how the parents were.

Blog 6: First Draft
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Act 1 Scene 1
Page 9
William Shakespeare is the author of the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, was baptized in 1564 and died in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in 1616. He was known as the best English poet and play writer. The play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” has no date on when it was written. But it does have the first edition by the bookseller Thomas Fisher on 8 October 1600.
I have chosen this scene and act from the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream“, because this leads the main plot of the entire play. Theseus is the duke of Athens who gave an order to Hermia. The order was chosen by her own father who is Egeus. Which is to either chose death or marry Demetrius as her husband. Hermia begs and explain their love whom is Lysander but Egeus disapprove him. At the end we see that Theseus is a very romantic person and he decides to tell Egeus that he will not let Hermia be forced into what she doesn’t like, but yet Egeus still disapprove Lysander. I also had chosen this scene because it shows the reality of love and relationships that changes through experiences.
Act 1 Scene 1
Page 9
Theseus: Take time to pause, and by the next new moon,
The sealing-day betwixt my love and me
For everlasting bond of fellowship,
Upon that day either prepare to die
For disobedience to your father’s will,
Or else to wed Demetrius, as he would,
Or on Diana’s altar to protest
For aye austerity and single life.
Demetrius: Relent, sweet Hermia; and, Lysander, yield
Thy crazed title to my certain right.
Lysander: You have her father’s love, Demetrius;
Let me have Hermia’s - do you marry him.
Egeus: Scornful Lysander, true, he hath my love,
And what is mine my love shall render him;
And she is mine, and all my right of her
I do estate unto Demetrius.

Our group did page 12 from the play "msd" question number 2. The question was to read the sayings from the play and make Lysander very persuasive, and show how Hermia responds wholeheartedly. At the beginning Hermia mentioned to be patient because if she marry him she will die. But then Lysander only sees his point of view which is there love for each other. He wanted both of them to run far away where they could get married and no trouble would be on them. At the end we see that Hermia agrees with him to meet in the woods to plan how to run away later. I dont think running away would solve the problem but infact create more problem. It is because thier parents will find out that there both missing and where ever they are and then they will find the lovers and kill her. The only solution is that i guess Lysander can say if they kill her they would have to kill him too and then maybe they wont kill any of them. I mean i dont really know its my guess and i think it will help them solve the problem better.

We have read the poem called "Brownie". In the poem we see that theres a stanza where they have brackets saying " (Nanny isn't certain, too.)". It shows that we are suppose to use our tone very slowly. Since Hermaneutics tells us the meaning and it tells us how theres an interaction between the reader and writer. The poem "Brownie" gives the reader of an imagination of where the place could be at by the words and descriptions were used. Like the first sentence of the poem is "In a corner of the bedroom is a great big curtain", we automatically knows where and how the things are going on buy the words used.
